Application and Funding

Funding

A limited number of funding stipends will be available for trainees and will be set at the current CIHR rates. Detailed information may be found in the STIHR Training & Grant Guide. Applicants cannot be guaranteed a stipend. In situations where a successful applicant already holds funding from another source, partial funding may be available. As well, in some cases, a research allowance may be available instead of a stipend. Funding stipends are available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents but will not be available to other international students. However, unfunded students may also participate in this program and will be required to follow the same application process. The stipend rates are as follows:

  • Masters and PhD students: $17,850
  • Post-doctoral fellow: $36,750 (must be within 5 years of PhD completion)
  • Healthcare professionals with licensure and 0-2 year(s) post graduate academic experience: $36,750
  • Healthcare professionals with licensure and 2 or more years post graduate academic experience: $47,250
  • Healthcare professionals without licensure: between $17, 850 and $36, 750 (department specific)

Trainees may not hold external graduate or post doctoral awards from CIHR and another federal funding agency (SSHRC; NSERC) concurrently with STIHR stipend funding. Trainees may not hold OGS funding concurrently with the STIHR stipend. Some university departments may allow you to hold both internal graduate awards and STIHR stipend funding, however this varies by institution and department and will therefore need to be assessed on an individual basis. Moreover, CIHR policies specify that other concurrent awards may only be valued at a monthly total of 50% of the STIHR monthly stipend. Trainees who are not seeking funding are also eligible to participate in this program.

As a limited number of stipends are available through this program, applicants are also encouraged to apply for external funding. External funding sources may include:

  • Canada–China Norman Bethune Health Research Scholarships Program (Please visit the CIHR website for further information: http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/39515.html)
  • CIHR, SSHRC or NSERC : MSc and Doctoral Awards; Post Doctoral Fellowships
  • Ontario Graduate Scholar (OGS)
