Population Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Population Health, Epidemiology & Biostatistics: This includes the collection and interpretation of primary data on drug safety and effectiveness from patients, using this data to develop predictors of benefit and harm and statistics to provide the foundation of proficiency needed for design and analysis of research studies, as well as the advancement of biostatistical capacity building in drug safety and effectiveness in the real world through training and mentoring.

BIOSTATISTICS

The Mission Statement

The mission of the Biostatistics domain is to develop the statistical, collaborative, and leadership expertise of individuals who, upon graduation, will have acquired sufficient skills in applications of statistics in solving complex problems in drug safety and effectiveness research, thereby participating in independent and collaborative research and teaching of biostatistics for improvement of health in Canada and throughout the world.

A Description of the Biostatistics Domain

The Biostatistics domain aims to provide trainees with the skills needed to conduct independent research into biostatistical topics, provide leadership as biostatistical collaborators in clinical, health systems and population health investigations and effectively teach biostatistics.

How Biostatistics links to drug safety and effectiveness research and the implications for training in this field…

The domain will expose trainees to applications of biostatistical concepts in drug safety and effectiveness research. Working on problems with researchers from other domains, we hope that graduates focusing on biostatistics will possess the following skills:

  • a strong foundation in biostatistical concepts/techniques and their application in study designs and data analysis of drug safety and effectiveness studies;
  • the ability to critically appraise methodologic aspects of research proposals and manuscripts;
  • the ability to develop or contribute to the development of grant proposals as methodologists;
  • the ability to teach or communicate biostatistical concepts effectively to non-biostatisticians; and
  • the ability to adapt existing statistical techniques or to develop new techniques to solve problems in drug safety and effectiveness.
